Performing American Democracy

Performing American Democracy examines the ideals, challenges, and milestones of the United States’ democratic journey by exploring its representation in performing arts. Students will analyze and interpret foundational texts (e.g., U.S. Constitution, Declaration of Independence, Federalist Papers) and evaluate how these principles are reflected and contested in cultural works like Broadway musicals ( , Hamilton ), plays ( The Crucible ), and American music (both symphonic and popular). Students will engage in creative projects, including performance and critique, fostering an embodied understanding of democratic ideals.
