This course examines the interaction among mass, elite, traditional, and indigenous art forms, their relationship with the dynamics of national/cultural identity in Latin America in the 19th and 20th centuries, and globalization. Forms of expression include oral poetry and narrative; the folletin (19th-century melodramas by installment) to 20th-century "fotonovelas," "radionovelas," and "telenovelas"; broadsides; comics; musical and political movements such as neo-folklore, new song, Nueva Troba, and Rock Latino; artistic movements such as Mexican muralist; traditional and popular crafts; cooking; popular dance; and film.
