Building Belief: Art and Ritual in the Greco-Roman Sanctuary

Catalog description

This seminar introduces students to the advanced study of the classical sanctuary, contexts where ancient ritual, myth, and architecture came together to express the varied identities of the Greco-Roman past and present. The course will introduce students to seminal texts in the study of Greco-Roman religion, the evolution of Greek and Roman scared architecture, and the varied forms of religious expression that fall outside the worship of the traditional classical pantheon. Students will develop a research project over the course of the semester and develop skills used by field archaeologists.
