POLI 4312
The Politics of Love
Fairfield University · UGRD · Fall 2026
1 section
Catalog description
While love is rarely taken seriously as a political emotion, especially in a polarized nation like the United States, some political theorists argue love can be tough, principled, and politically transformative. This begs the question: Should love have a place in politics? This seminar explores how love enables us to confront both the beauty and brutality of ourselves and the world, and from that, engage in acts of personal and structural change to address enduring problems of injustice. We explore these dimensions of the politics of love through close reading of its fiercest critics, ambivalent supporters, and greatest proponents.
