Catalog description

This course examines contemporary Latin American politics, with particular attention to the challenges and opportunities for democracy and human rights in the region. The course explores key historical developments, the challenges and opportunities presented by domestic and international dynamics in the region, the causes and consequences of democratic breakdowns in the past, the transition to democracy in the later part of the twentieth century, the difficulties several young democracies face today, and the continuous and uneven efforts to advance human rights in the region.
