Introduction to Solid State Physics

Catalog description

This course covers the principles underlying the structure and functionalities of solids such as metals and semiconductors which are at the core of modern technologies. The students will get exposed to practical aspects which will prepare them for their future careers either in research or industrial settings. It is an upper division course for physics majors and minors. The lectures discuss the structure of solids, the forces that bind the atoms to form crystals, and then their electronic properties, a fundamental aspect that enables electrical and magnetic behavior. Recent developments in the field are discussed towards the end.
