Catalog description

This course will explore the work of Martin Heidegger (1889-1976), one of the most influential philosophers of the twentieth century. The course will take the form of a close reading of  Being and Time (1927) and “What is Metaphysics?” (1929).  The hinge around which the course will turn is Heidegger’s existential analysis of death. The course will also examine a variety of responses to the work of Heidegger: Merleau-Ponty, Phenomenology of Perception ; Jonas, “Evolution and Freedom”; Levinas, Time and the Othe r; Blanchot, The Space of Literature ; and Derrida, Aporias .
