Catalog description

This course offers students an introduction to the interdisciplinary field of linguistics, with a focus on the linguistic grammar of English. We will examine the grammatical rules of English by studying the main branches of linguistics (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) and applying those principles to additional areas of study, such as sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and applied linguistics. This course’s focus on Global Englishes allows us to extend our analysis of English grammar to considerations of English’s relationship to globalization, language varieties, language policy and planning, and education. This course is designed for students seeking to learn more about the structure of English grammar and how it shapes communication.
