Catalog description

This course includes a comprehensive study of the principles, methods, and materials necessary for teaching science and social studies at the elementary level. Candidates explore effective elements of instruction as they relate to practical applications in the classroom. The course addresses teaching science and social studies through readings, active participation in class activities, lesson/unit plan design and micro-teaching, class discussions, and individual reflections. Guided by current research and practice, candidates in this course design curricula for the elementary grades that develop content knowledge, inquiry skills, critical thinking, problem solving, social responsibility, and technological competence. This course includes a required 10-hour field component.
