Catalog description

This course traces the development of American jazz from its origins in Black musical traditions. Topics include the roots of jazz in ragtime, blues, work songs, and march music. Also addresses the development of different jazz styles, such as Dixieland in the 1920s, swing in the 1930s, bop in the 1940s, and present-day evolutions. The course emphasizes connecting the historical period with the music of jazz: America's original art music.
