Reactor Core Fundamentals introduces the student to the theory behind operational neutron chain reaction systems. Specific topics in the course include neutron cross sections, fast, epithermal and thermal neutron flux, reaction rates, the fission process, neutron production, neutron multiplication, the six-factor formula, reactivity, subcritical multiplication, prompt and delayed neutron fractions, reactor period, reactivity coefficients, control rod worth, and fission product poisons. This course also includes laboratory activities using an online simulator, wherein neutron interactions with materials will be demonstrated towards the cause and effect relationship and core reactivity. A Team Redesign project will exercise and evaluate engineering fundamentals, teamwork, and communication / presentation skills. This course is a core component of the Bachelor of Science in Nuclear Engineering Technology (BSNET) degree program. View Sample Syllabus
