This course introduces students to the principles of, and approaches to, countering terrorism in the United States and elsewhere in the world. To establish the current culture of mitigating terrorist threats, the ideological spectrum and history of terrorist objectives, methods, and targets are covered thoroughly. Students will discuss fundamental strategies, as well as controversial tactics of hard-line and soft-line counterterrorism approaches and how the United States has altered its strategy with the modern era of terrorism. Finally, students will analyze past and current regulations of intelligence gathering, as well as the rules governing intelligence gathering by law enforcers, military and non-law enforcement organizations, and the implications this has on the privacy rights of individuals, citizens or otherwise, in the context of counterterrorism.
