During this course learners will examine the historical evolution of domestic terrorism and the complexities surrounding the definition and conceptualization of terrorism. An analysis of the criminological, sociological, and psychological perspectives of terrorists will be used to gain an understanding of the process of radicalization and the emergence of radical Islamists in the west. Identification and examination of right wing extremists; left wing extremists; Christian and other religious extremism, single-issue groups, militias, and homegrown terrorism will also be studied. Other topics to be covered will include legal and ethical issues surrounding counterterrorism and domestic intelligence gathering, lone wolf terrorists, transnational connections to terrorism and the role of the news media, Internet, and social media in advancing or deterring domestic terrorism.
