Scientists have stated that we are experiencing the sixth mass extinction of biological diversity since the Earth formed and that we may well be in a new geological age, the Anthropocene Epoch. Through readings and numerous activities, this course examines the rise and fall of biological diversity over time through the study of ecology, evolution, and conservation biology. Topics include the meaning and value of biodiversity, major threats to species and ecosystems, and efforts to conserve, manage, and sustain biological diversity. In addition, as science and technology are now at the heart of every aspect of the global economy, a wide range of employers hire workers with courses and degrees in the Natural Sciences. Employers such as JP Morgan Chase, the National Institutes of Health, environmental businesses, law firms, and the health care industry, hire workers with degrees including courses like this.
