Introduces the principles of classification and briefly surveys the five kingdoms of living organisms, then compares the body plans of plants and animals and their mechanisms for nutrient procurement and processing, gas exchange, transport, osmotic regulation and waste removal, movement, reproduction and development, integration, homeostasis and response to the environment. Patterns of interaction of organisms with each other and with their environment are also investigated.
