Catalog description

In this course, teacher candidates will receive training in both formal and informal assessment procedures and data interpretation. Candidates will also tutor within their licensure area for ten weeks. Teacher candidates will administer assessments and use assessment data to design and deliver effective reading instruction and intervention to a student enrolled at a local school. Candidates will tutor either one-on-one or in a small group with no more than three students. Students will receive weekly coaching and immediate feedback and support from the course instructor. Key learning outcomes for this course include understanding the needs of struggling readers, developing the knowledge and skills to select and give appropriate reading assessments for various purposes, data-based planning, implementing evidence-based instructional lessons, and monitoring student progress. Emphasis will also be placed on utilizing the problem-solving model within a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) to support all learners.
