Specialized Practice Reflective Seminar II
Erikson Institute · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Concurrent with their specialized practice year practicum, students will participate in a weekly reflective supervision seminar that focuses on learning through self-reflection, reading, discussion, and ongoing group participation. The goal of this course is to help students integrate knowledge with practice and reflection at a more independent level and to further deepen their capacity to reflect on their social work practice. Students will be asked to think critically about what they do, why they do it, how their practice both reflects and affects who they are, and what they believe about people’s struggles and change process. Students will also be asked to reflect upon the structure, mission and goals of the organizations they are engaged with and to consider how these interact with their own professional identity, experience, and belief system. At this point in their professional development, it is expected that students will be closer to identifying themselves as social work professionals who have specialized knowledge and practice experience with children and families. K472 Introduction to Group Work (1 credit hour) This course is intended to be an introduction to group work as a modality of social work practice. Students will be presented with both theoretical and practical approaches commonly utilized in the field of group work. Students will be familiarized with various models of group development, while developing an appreciation for and understanding of group dynamics as they relate to various types of groups employed across a wide population. Students will increase their knowledge and skill base of group work as a social work method, while enhancing their understanding of how group work is practiced within the field and their role as group developer, facilitator/leader, and group member.
