Reading, Writing, and Talk: Inclusive Teaching Strategies for All Young Learners

Catalog description

This course prepares teacher candidates to guide young children from diverse family and cultural backgrounds in learning to read and write. Teacher candidates learn to recognize and describe developmental stages in learning to communicate, read and write for 0- to 8- year-olds, describe and identify different factors that influence the learning process, and design curricula for reading and writing that meet the Common Core State Standards. Teacher candidates develop a framework for building a classroom library of literature and informational reading materials that reflects the literacy practices and points of view of a diverse multicultural society. This course provides a foundation in the cognitive, socio- cultural, linguistic, and motivational influences on literacy and language development, including an overview of the current science of reading discourse and debates.
