Students with Disabilities: Moderate and Severe ((3 Credits))

Catalog description

This course prepares teacher candidates to teach students with moderate and severe disabilities in a variety of classroom settings. This course is comprised of an overview of developmental disabilities, etiology, characteristics, instructional services and behavior interventions, and findings of current research. This course will provide an introduction to curricula pertaining to students with severe disabilities. Emphasis will be placed on family-centered planning, team approaches, access to the general education curriculum, activity-based instruction, and community-based instruction. Specific information on curriculum and instructional strategies related to communication, motor and self-care skills will be included. Teacher candidates must complete at least 10 hours (non-certified teacher candidates) or 5 hours (certified teacher candidates) in a classroom observing/assisting a certified special education teacher in New York state to explore the relevance of the topics they are studying to a classroom setting. Observation assignments will integrate theoretical and research-based concepts with classroom practice. Prerequisites: SPED 6005 .
