Stereotyping, Prejudice, and Discrimination ((4 Credits))

Catalog description

This course examines the historical transformation, psychological basis, and impact of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination. We will investigate theoretical perspectives, including concepts of intersectionality (race, class, gender, etc.), empirical findings, and applications of psychological research on social categorization, prejudice, discrimination, individual and group identity, and intergroup relations. We will focus on the source of stereotypes, prejudice, discrimination, and the impact on their target. Topics will include, but are not limited to, the automaticity of stereotypes, historical and contemporary forms of prejudice, theoretical approaches to intergroup relations, the psychological origins and consequences of prejudice and discrimination, and interventions for reducing bias and improving intergroup relations. The role of stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination in creating social inequality and injustice, as well as potential social justice action, will also be considered.
