Early Childhood Development ((4 Credits))

Catalog description

This course focuses on the theories and research pertaining to early childhood development from conception through age eight from the perspective of play as the foundation for development in early childhood. The study will examine biological aspects of development and how environmental factors (culture, heritage, socioeconomic level, personal health and safety, nutrition, past or present abusive or dangerous environment, factors in the home, school, and community) can impact a child’s readiness to learn. Through course content and informal observation of children, students will explore the interconnectedness among all developmental domains (physical, cognitive, social-emotional, creative, language, and literacy) and the implication for educational settings that support play as engaged learning and concepts of trauma-informed care. Prerequisites: HUDV 1005 or equivalent (SUNY Transfer Pathway).
