U.S. Sport History ((4 Credits))

Catalog description

The growth of modern sport has been influenced by broad social and political developments in different parts of the world. This course examines aspects of U.S. society through the history of sport. Given the relationship of sports to social and cultural imperatives, the course explores how race, class, and gender have shaped U.S. games and how the cultural significance of sports has impacted U.S. identities and values. Students will be able to analyze the perspective of athletes, fans, and owners which are critical in understanding the evolution of sports in the U.S. within economic and political contexts. Prior successful completion of an introductory level course in U.S. history is preferred although not required.
