Media Literacy and Critical Thinking Across the Curriculum ((3 Credits))

This course will provide educators with research, strategies and practices to facilitate media literacy skills in the K-12 curriculum. As we strive to teach our students to analyze media sources, to be responsible consumers and creators of digital information, it is a necessity to give them the skills to “decode our world.” It is critical to seamlessly weave media literacy knowledge and skills into all content areas. Course participants will explore Constructivist Media Decoding (CDM) with a focus on critical thinking and reflection. The course also takes a deep dive into the role AI plays in media literacy. The successful integration of media literacy into the K-12 classrooms requires a curriculum driven approach with lessons that teach core curriculum along with media literacy skills. Successful completion of the course will provide our participants with a deeper understanding of media literacy and a dynamic, robust toolkit with which to apply these skills in the K-12 classroom.
