Literacy Assessment ((3 Credits))

Catalog description

In this course, students will explore and evaluate a variety of assessment models for the many strands of literacy, including phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, oral language, reading comprehension, motivation and engagement, and writing across birth through grade 12. Multi-tiered system of supports (MTSS) and Response to Intervention (RTI) across grade levels, with particular attention to supporting multilingual learners (MLLs), students with disabilities, and screening for dyslexia risk are addressed. Case studies will be used to familiarize students with purposes for assessment, including screening, diagnostics, and progress monitoring. Students will critically evaluate literacy assessment spanning the essential domains of literacy (mentioned above) as well as administer various literacy assessments to students and use the information to pair students with appropriate instructional materials. Students will consolidate their learning in a final professional development project as they consider the intersections of data-driven literacy assessment and literacy leadership.
