Kinship, Adoption, and Foster Care ((4 Credits))

Catalog description

This course explores the historical, legal, and social development of formal and informal caregiving systems, including kinship care, adoption, and foster care. Emphasis is placed on how institutions, laws, policies, and service delivery frameworks influence caregiving practices and decision-making in both state-supported and privately arranged contexts. Students will examine the roles of child welfare agencies, legal systems, and community networks in shaping care experiences. Particular focus is given to the ways that race, ethnicity, gender, class, religion, sexual orientation, disability, and geographic location impact the delivery and outcomes of caregiving. Students will critically assess the intersections of power, privilege, and oppression within these systems and consider ethical and professional responsibilities. Self-reflection on personal values and implicit biases is essential to preparing for culturally responsive and ethically sound practice in diverse caregiving environments.
