This course surveys Western art from the Baroque to the rise of Modernism, tracing the dramatic shifts from the ornate and theatrical to the sleek and innovative. Students will discover essential works of painting, sculpture, and architecture in their cultural, political, and philosophical contexts, learning to analyze art through its form, content, and meaning. Emphasis is placed on understanding stylistic movements, developing critical vocabulary, and exploring how art reflected and shaped the societies that produced it.
