Political Protest and the Challenges of Democracy in Africa

The second decade of the 21st century was marked by the rise of social movements which continue to impact democratic processes in Africa. Starting with the 2010 Arab revolts in Tunisia, these movements have fostered a stronger sense of agency among young Africans who resort to digital technology and other sophisticated methods of protest (art, sit-ins, music etc.) to challenge the socio-political and economic status quo. This course examines the causes of the rise of contemporary social insurgencies in Africa and their effects in the socio-political and economic environments. It also explores African social activists' tools to confront power establishments such as music, graffiti, digital technology and street protests. In addition to an overview of social movement and democracy theories, a particular focus will be placed on case studies from different regions of Africa.
