Legal and Regulatory Issues in Uncrewed and Autonomous Systems

Catalog description

This course introduces students to the legal and regulatory context in which uncrewed and autonomous systems operate. Students will investigate the evolution of federal, state, and local laws and regulations governing the use of uncrewed and autonomous systems to evaluate how past, present, and future policies may influence operations within the industry. Students will examine how administrative processes function and how uncrewed and autonomous system stakeholders can participate in these processes. Using case law as well as selected readings and examples, students will expand their understanding of legal, regulatory, and ethical issues created by or specific to uncrewed and autonomous systems and their applications. The course will provide students with a better understanding of the various legal issues that may affect different stakeholders in the industry locally, nationally, as well as globally.
