Catalog description

Prerequisite: Grade of C or better in ART 111 or consent of instructor ^ Building on the foundational skills acquired in Jewelry & Metalsmithing I, students will practice advanced methods of metalsmithing and lapidary in jewelry making. Students will explore a variety of techniques in metal forming, soldering, surface decoration alongside techniques in stone cutting, shaping, polishing and setting for ornamentation. This course will highlight the integration of traditional craftsmanship with modern digital fabrication methods to create intricate and expressive sculptural and jewelry forms (1.1) Special Note: This course involves the use of specialized equipment and materials that may be hazardous, including extreme heat, hot metal, sharp edges, open flames, sharp tools and airborne particles from cutting and grinding. Some equipment and shared studio spaces may also involve intermittent loud noises. Students are required to follow all safety protocols, complete safety training, and use appropriate protective equipment at all times. Individuals with sensitivities to heat, dust, or physical studio demands should carefully consider these requirements before enrolling.
