Catalog description
This course provides students an understanding of the structure of the United States’ healthcare system and the influence of policies on the cost, quality, and accessibility of health care services. The course introduces students to how health care is organized, delivered, and reimbursed. All topics, where applicable, will be discussed in the context of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010(ACA) and how policy affects the practice of medicine. Osteopathic Medical School - Y ear Three VCOM has developed a model medical curriculum that provides an academic environment within the community- based hospital and outpatient medical practices. The OMS 3 year is designed to provide students with a broad foundation for primary care medicine. Students in the OMS 3 year complete 8 4-week core rotations in the following disciplines: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine I and II, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Rural Primary Care, and Surgery. In addition, students complete a research rotation and 1 medical or surgical selective. Each rotation is accompanied by curriculum delivered in case-based format and reading assignments to ensure consistency of learning of the required content. The curriculum also includes monthly didactic presentations and student case presentations/discussions where students from other health professions attend. Students are required to complete and pass two case presentations in their OMS 3 year. Students who do not pass a case presentation are required to meet with the DSME to create a remediation plan, which most often includes completing and passing another case presentation. Successful completion of two passing case presentations is required but is not GPA accountable or included in the rotation grade.
