Pre-requisites: ENGL 201 or permission of instructor. Explores the ways people have lived in and thought about their natural environment in the United States. Begins with the colonists who thought of the wilderness as a realm to conquer and concludes with the contemporary American environmentalists who seek to "preserve" the wilderness. Makes extensive use of films and books in exploring this theme.
