Catalog description

Pre-requisites: ENGL 201 or permission of instructor. Was the Civil War fought over slavery or state’s rights? This course answers that question, addressing the rise of slavery, the political conflict over slavery, the secession and rebellion of 11 Southern states, the military suppression of the rebellion and occupation of the South, and the political reconciliation of Southern whites with Northern whites at the expense of Southern African Americans. Particular emphasis is placed on differing historical interpretations of these events.
