Pre-requisites: ENGL 201 or permission of instructor. Latin American indigenous societies existed for more than 10,000 years prior to European contact. This course focuses on the highly structured pre-Colombian societies of the Maya and the Mexica in central Mexico as well as the Andean Inca Empire and its subject polities. First, examines pre-Columbian civilizations and then reviews how Europeans and native peoples interacted with one another following Christopher Columbus's first landfall in the Caribbean in 1492.
