Catalog description

Pre-requisites: ENGL 201 or permission of instructor. Satisfies: a university graduation requirement–global studies. This course explains how a game devised to toughen elite English schoolboys in the late 19th century became a worldwide phenomenon today played in diverse settings from favelas in Brazil, or refugee camps in Jordan, to artificial turf (aka plastic pitch) in Iceland. Examining the history of soccer/football/fútbol provides an opportunity to look at nationalism, decolonization, wealth inequality, immigration, sectarian conflict, racism, sexism, neoliberal economics, etc. across the globe.
