Catalog description

MA113LAB is a foundational medical assisting lab course focused on applying the medical assistant role to key topics in anatomy, physiology, pathology, treatment procedures, and disease prevention for the following body systems: the sensory system (eyes, ears, nose, throat), the nervous system (central and peripheral), and the endocrine system. Learners explore and practice skills within the medical assistant scope of practice, including assisting with patient assessments, adult and pediatric phlebotomy, venipuncture, and capillary blood collection. Learners also work with laboratory forms and EHR systems to document common blood tests, such as Complete Blood Count (CBC), Serum Electrolytes and Chemistry (SMA7), Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), Prothrombin Time (PT/INR), Partial Prothrombin Time (PTT), and ABO blood groups. Core MA skills that repeat in each course are administering intramuscular (IM), subcutaneous (SC), and intradermal (ID) injections, performing phlebotomy, conducting capillary punctures, and operating EKG procedures.
