MA113ASYNC is designed to introduce learners to theory-based information regarding the medical assistant’s role of assisting primary care providers (physicians, physician assistants, or nurse practitioners) with physical examinations related to the nervous (central and peripheral), sensory (eyes, ears, nose, throat), and endocrine systems. Additionally, learners will focus on anatomy and physiology, diagnostic procedures, treatment procedures, and disease prevention for the nervous, sensory, and endocrine systems. Patient care principles involved in adult and pediatric phlebotomy will be examined, including equipment, venipuncture, capillary blood collection, and the chain of custody. Learners discuss common blood tests (normal and abnormal ranges) for the following: Complete Blood Count (CBC), Serum Electrolytes and Chemistry (SMA7), Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate (ESR), Prothrombin Time (PT/INR), Partial Prothrombin Time (PTT), and ABO blood groups. Lastly, learners also develop important skills regarding job search, career development, and communication best practices.
