Catalog description

This course provides students with the opportunity to study and experience the health care system, culture and society of Costa Rica. The goal is to enable students to discover the unique complexity and challenges of healthcare within a global context through the lens of Costa Rica?s culture and perception of health and wellness. The course consists of both pre-trip classes and an immersive experience utilizing service learning pedagogy and reflective journaling. The pre-trip seminars enable students to explore the religion, politics, history, education, economy, family systems, values, art and culture and healthcare of Costa Rica. The immersive experience will consist of a 5-9 day trip where students will participate in provision of collaborative healthcare services, observational experiences and/or tours at local healthcare facilities as well as socio-cultural and recreational activities designed to provide an understanding of the history/culture of the country.
