Catalog description

This course is an examination of the traditional, biblically grounded doctrine that Scripture puts people in living and life-giving contact with the Word of God. The course has two major sections which reflect Anselm?s famous definition of theology as fides quaerens intellectum (?faith seeking understanding?). Part 1 (Fides) sets forth revealed teaching, given in Scripture, about the Word of God, its associations with casual power and modes of presence, and its mediation through inspired human discourse. This part of the course will be a close study of important biblical passages. Part 2 (Quaerens Intellectum) seeks a deeper understanding of this revealed teaching by explicating the theological and philosophical principles which help us grasp its intelligibility. Topics to be considered here include creation, human knowing and language, the divine economy, and the spirituality of biblical interpretation.
