THEO 342
What is Doing Theology?
Duquesne University · UGRD · Fall 2026
Catalog description
Theology as ?faith seeking understanding? (Anselm of Canterbury) or ?doctrine about God according to divine revelation? (Thomas Aquinas) is addressed to contemporary men and women. Consequently, theology cannot escape confrontation with its contexts and hence dialogue with other epistemologies, especially, philosophy and social sciences. The challenge is how theology can benefit from this dialogue without dissolving its object. A critical examination of selected texts from different approaches in theology will help to show the risks and chances of the confrontation between theology and other epistemologies. Then the course will engage a reflection on what it means to do theology today according to Catholic tradition.
