Introduction to Mission Theology

The word ?mission? ? referring to the ?mission of Jesus Christ? - is at the center of Christian religion, and it is often used at religious events and in theological reflections. Yet, it is a word that has been widely misrepresented and poorly understood at different stages of Christian history by many Christians (even Church leaders and theologians). In spite of the contemporary insights provided in the Church?s documents anchored in the Scriptures, the misunderstanding currently prevails. Many Christians involved in ?social works? narrowly see those works merely as ?mission.? However, the ?mission of Jesus Christ? is much broader than social works. What is the basis for those ?social works? we do as Christians? How do we properly understand mission today? This course, therefore, introduces the students to the study of mission theology and practice in the Christian (especially Catholic) tradition. It will involve the exploration of biblical basis of mission, the anthropological interface, relevant conciliar/historical documents and practical consequences.
