Clinical Application of Sign Language for Medical Professionals? is an introductory course available to speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and education students of all sign levels. Students will be familiarized with healthcare access issues facing the d/Deaf community, learn to use basic sign language, and discuss necessary knowledge and skills to navigate appropriate service provision for persons who use sign language (e.g., working with interpreters, Deaf culture, communication strategies, awareness of sign language disorders, etc). The course will begin in English with focus on pertinent background knowledge and transition gradually to a voice-off ASL classroom as sign skills are acquired. Students will be required to attend two Deaf events during the semester for cultural and linguistic immersion experience.
