Advanced Phonetics

Catalog description

The primary objective of this course is to enable students to acquire an overview of transcription phonetics and the application of transcription phonetics in the clinical management of clients. Students are required to be skillful in conducting phonetic transcriptions using phonetic symbols, as well as dialectal variations, disordered, and second-language variations. Students will gain a fundamental understanding of phonetic and phonologic development and speech perception. Throughout the course, students will also establish a deep understanding of normal and pathological with detailed phonetic characteristics that encompass anatomical, physiological, acoustic and perceptual properties of the speech sounds. Additionally, students will develop skills in analyzing and identifying the acoustic and perceptual properties of a variety of speech sounds of Chinese language and dialects of Chinese language. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches will be employed to study speech sound properties, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of this field. Pre-requisite: none
