Integrated Clinical Education: Foundations of Practice Lab I

Catalog description

This course is the first of a multi-course sequence of integrated clinical experience. The goal of this class is to allow students opportunities for to practice/apply new skills in real world scenarios, demonstrate clinical preparedness, and develop critical thinking skills. This section of the course will focus on the application of clinical skills learned specifically in courses being taught concurrently: Orthopedic Science of the Upper Quarter (PHYT 524), and Foundational Concepts 1 (PHYT 516) . The course will require students to assimilate prior knowledge from Exam Methods (PHYT 427, 428) and Applied Anatomy and Kinesiology to apply to real patient scenarios or simulated patient activities. Application of newly acquired skills in examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention strategies for spinal conditions involving the upper quarter as well as the upper extremity including the shoulder, elbow, wrist and hand. Students will have the ability to work with patients in the classroom and in clinical locations. Students will be supervised by faculty who are licensed in physical therapy and experts in patient evaluation and management. Students will learn the role of the physical therapist in an interdisciplinary team of health care providers. The students will be expected to complete pre-course readings and be prepared for the primary lab focus of this course. The lab sessions will provide the student with hands on experience in examination techniques, manual therapy techniques, and the design of patient home exercise programs.
