Clinical Neurology Lecture

Catalog description

This course is the foundation and start of the clinical neuromuscular curriculum. The course will focus on the examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, plan of care and intervention elements of patient/client management as described in the APTA Guide to Physical Therapy Practice for individuals with adult neurological conditions. The course will include a functional neuroscience review and introduce students to foundational motor control theories including the ICF disablement model, Hedman?s model of problem analysis, movement system diagnoses, and Gordon?s model of rehabilitation. Students will learn how to apply these theories to develop a problem-oriented approach that will allow them to prioritize areas of examination, evaluate the results of clinical findings, determine the appropriate physical therapy diagnosis, and to establish a plan of care for adults with neurological impairments. Specifically, students will be introduced to principles of experience-dependent neural plasticity to guide selection of interventions. They will learn to make clinical decisions regarding physical therapy interventions for individuals with neurological impairments, activity impairments and participation restrictions.
