Catalog description

This course is the first of a three-course sequence in Examination Methods. The course is designed as an introduction to basic examination and documentation techniques, which can be used with any patient diagnosis. The course draws upon pre-professional prerequisites in Anatomy and Physiology and Tests and Measures in Health Science. Topics include use of the Guide to Physical Therapy Practice, standard precautions, models of disablement, as well as basic concepts in: hand- washing, confidentiality, precautions, basic note-writing, informed consent, examination scheme, history-taking, pain assessment, general concepts of palpation, range of motion and manual muscle testing. Students will be exposed to these concepts within the framework of patient problems and will be expected to integrate and apply this knowledge during the classroom laboratory experiences. Examinations and competencies will reflect this philosophy.
