Applied Anatomy and Kinesiology of the Movement System

Catalog description
This course focuses on the gross anatomy and kinesiology of various regions of the human body, employing a regional approach to study human gross anatomy while integrating osteokinematics and arthrokinematics of normal and pathologic joints of the movement system. The course covers the anatomy and kinesiology of the upper quarter including the shoulder, cervical region, elbow/forearm, wrist/hand, and axial skeleton. The course also includes lower quarter structures including the lumbar spine, hip, pelvis, knee, ankle, foot, and the lower extremity. Students will learn in detail the muscular, skeletal, connective tissue, and neurovascular structures found in these regions. Students must also be enrolled in the laboratory course that accompanies this lecture course. This includes extensive time dedicated to dissection of the human body in the Human Anatomy Lab. The laboratory components are augmented by demonstrations, videos, and hands-on activities. Collectively, the Lecture and Lab sessions will reinforce correct anatomical terminology, gross anatomy, arthrology, arthrokinematics, osteokinematics, and the organization and understanding relationships of the various structures in the movement system. Course participants will utilize the information presented in both lecture and laboratory sessions to answer medically and clinically relevant questions, preparing them specifically for upcoming courses including Orthopedic Science of the Upper Quarter (PHYT-524) and Orthopedic Science of the Lower Quarter (PHYT-525).
