Integrated Clinical Education: Foundations of Practice II

Catalog description

This course is the second of a multi-course sequence of integrated clinical experience. The goal of this class is to allow students opportunities for to practice/apply new skills in real world scenarios, demonstrate clinical preparedness, and develop critical thinking skills. This section of the course will focus on the application of clinical skills learned specifically in courses being taught concurrently: Orthopedic Science of the Lower Quarter (PHYT 525), and Foundational Concepts II (PHYT 517) . The course will require students to assimilate prior knowledge from Exam Methods (PHYT 427, 42 8) and Applied Anatomy and Kinesiology (PHYT-439 & 440) to apply to real patient scenarios or simulated patient activities. Application of newly acquired skills in examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, and intervention strategies for spinal conditions involving the lower quarter as well as the Lower extremity including the hip, knee, and foot & ankle. Students will have the ability to work with patients and apply hands-on training. Students will be supervised by faculty who are licensed in physical therapy and experts in patient evaluation and management. Students will learn the role of the physical therapist in an interdisciplinary team of health care providers. The students will be expected to complete pre-course readings and be prepared for the primary lab focus of this course. The lab sessions will provide the student with practice and experience in examination techniques, manual therapy techniques, and the design of patient home exercise programs. This writing-enhanced course equips students with the skills to produce clear, concise, and professional written communication in the context of the physical therapy progession.
