Catalog description

The physics of electromagnetic fields at an introductory level for students majoring in physics. Topics include the electrostatic field, potential and energy, capacitance, electric circuits, magnetostatics, electromagnetic induction and the Maxwell equations in integral form. The approach emphasizes foundational knowledge, critical thinking, mathematical skill and independent learning, in preparation for subsequent study in physics. While a strong command of differentiation and vector algebra is presumed, elements of integral calculus are introduced as relevant. Credit is not allowed for both PHYS 222/212. Co-requisite: PHYS 222R. Prerequisites: MATH 116 (can be taken concurrently) and C or better in PHYS 221 or in PHYS 211. Offered only in the spring.
