Exploring Black Public History in Pittsburgh and Expanding the Narrative

This course delves into the rich and often overlooked public history of the African American community in Western Pennsylvania over the Greater Pittsburgh area. We will explore the challenges and opportunities of creating inclusive public history by examining how Black history has been represented, interpreted, and preserved in public spaces across the region. Additionally, we will critically analyze the role of museums, historical societies, and other institutions in shaping public perceptions of Black history. By applying public history methodologies, such as genealogical research, we will expand the narrative of African American history in Pittsburgh, and students will use their knowledge and lessons learned to create diverse projects that tell the stories and contributions of Black Pittsburghers.
