Patient Care Skills I is the first course in the Pharmacy Practice sequence. The purpose of this course is introduce students to the contemporary role of the pharmacist as a provider of patient centered care in community, ambulatory, and institutional pharmacy practice settings. Students will learn the steps of the Pharmacists? Patient Care Process (PPCP) and develop the interpersonal communication skills necessary for the delivery of team-based, patient care. Skills emphasized in this course include foundational patient communication skills (e.g. interviewing), advanced patient communication strategies (e.g. handling difficult situations, health literacy, cultural competence), and communication skills necessary for successful interactions with other healthcare professionals. Students will learn how to systematically assess drug therapy to identify drug related problems and select and use drug information resources and informatics as tools for providing patient-centered care.
